A breezy late afternoon and early evening in Folsom led to some super-fast times at the Golden West Invitational held at Folsom High on Saturday.

No one ran faster than Georgia’s D’Angelo Cherry, who won the 100 meters in a wind-aided 10.16 seconds, which was not only a meet record but also the fastest time run this season by a high-school athlete.

Indiana’s Candyce McCrone won both the 100 and 200 meters in 11.37 and 23.47, respectively. North Carolina’s Spencer Adams also had a great day, winning the 110-meter high hurdles in 13.66 and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 37.11.

Jordan Hasay of Mission Prep in San Luis Obispo also wowed the crowd by winning the 800 meters in 2:09.92.

Locally, Benji Xie and Kathryn Fergerson put together the highest finishes of Oak Ridge athletes competing in the invitational. Xie finished sixth in the freshman boys’ mile with a time of 4:42.30, while Fergerson placed sixth in the pole vault with a vault of 11 feet, ¼ inch.

Feross and Amjed Aboukhadijeh both competed in the boys’ mile and placed seventh and 10th, respectively, Feross running a 4:32.84 and Amjed finishing in 4:39.20.

Timery Mueller also finished seventh in the long jump at 17’0”, while Jenna Yowell competed but did not place in the pole vault.

“The conditions were very windy, but most were pretty happy with how they competed,” Oak Ridge coach Rob Fairley said. “It was really nasty for the distance runners and pole vaulters, but I think the results were fine considering the conditions.”
