Xie sets meet record at Cordova
Oak Ridge High’s track and field team opened the 2008 season at the Clarke Massey Relays at Cordova High on Saturday. The freshman-sophomore Trojans took first place, while the varsity boys finished fourth and the girls took ninth. Benji Xie set a meet record in the 3,200-meter run, finishing the race in first place in 10 minutes, 18.62 seconds, to lead the freshman team. Will Findlay, who cleared 5 feet, 7 inches in the high jump, the highest of any competitor at the freshman-sophomore level, teamed with Marcus Friend to win that event with a height of 11’2â€. The only other freshman-sophomore winners were the boys 4-by-800 relay team of Jonathan Strong, Colin Kitowski, Shlomo Khamishon and Greg Barrier, who posted a winning time of 9:01.69. Two varsity teams also placed first. The 4-by-800 relay team of Feross Aboukhadijeh, Jack Crawford, Amjed Aboukhadijeh and Jason McRoberts ran an 8:13.36, while the boys distance medley team of Aboukhadijeh, Jackson Burnette, Aboukhadijeh and McRoberts finished with a winning time of 10:59.13. For the freshman-sophomore girls, Sarah Vaughn tied for the best individual high jump of the day at that level, as she cleared the bar at 5’0â€. Oak Ridge will compete next in the Don Gilbert/Bob King Track and Field Invitational at Granite Bay on Saturday.
