Wrestling coach Mike Sundby honored at tournament

Mike Sundby was honored for more than 10 years of excellent community service and coaching. For the past 10-plus years, Sundby has given his time to the El Dorado Hills community by coaching first at Marina Village and then the El Dorado Hills Wrestling Club. Since 2000 he has given start to many of Oak Ridge and Ponderosa high schools top wrestlers. The following Oak Ridge High graduates who went on to wrestle at Division I colleges got their start from Sundby in elementary or middle school: Andy Wagner, Cal Poly, Kyle West, Utah Valley University, Vincent Waldhauser, University of Virginia. Current Oak Ridge Masters qualifiers who also got their start with Sundby include Trey Reese, Josh Ploke, Keaton Subjeck, Taylor Ellerman, Hugh Ellerman, Cameron Miller and Zach Claiborne. Some Ponderosa wrestlers of note that started with Sundby include Jace Miller, Menlo College and Jesse Routsong, Embery Riddle University. “With Mike there is no ego; he does it for the kids to help them learn the best technique before entering their high school programs,” said Benjamin West, head coach and co-founder of the El Dorado Hills Wrestling Club, when asked of Sundby’s greatest contribution. “Mike has also done an outstanding job in training coaches in this community.” Currently the El Dorado Hills Wrestling Club has more than 110 wrestlers and 22 volunteer coaches.
