Caitlin Welsch helped lift Oak Ridge High’s varsity girls’ water polo team to a fifth-place finish at the Reno Invitational held Friday and Saturday. Welsch led the team in scoring over the weekend, including scoring two late goals to bring the team into a tie with Del Campo, before teammate Marion Sanborn scored the game-winner, as the Lady Trojans won their final game of the tournament in exciting fashion, 5-4. “We were down 4-2 to Del Camp with about 3 ½ minutes left and locked them down and got some momentum going,” Oak Ridge coach Don McCormick said. “Caitlin scored two goals to tie it and Marion put us out front.” Oak Ridge won two games during the tournament, also defeating Ignacio Valley, 6-2. The Lady Trojans also tied Woodcreek, 1-1 and lost to Kearns, Utah, 10-1. “Caitlin was definitely our best player throughout the tournament, and Marion also played well, as did our goalie, Hannah Abendschein,” McCormick said. “She came up huge all weekend.” After losing six of seven starters from a year ago, McCormick is happy with his team’s 3-2-1 record. “We pretty much had to rebuild the team, but so far we’ve played well as a team and pulled things together.” Oak Ridge’s next match isn’t until the league opener against Ponderosa on Sept. 16.
