FOLSOM CA - Whether you?re headed to the beach this summer, or just to the backyard, now?s the time to pick up some great books. Confused about what to read next? Folsom Library has you covered with a visit from renowned Book Passage President Elaine Petrocelli, who will share the season?s best reads for all ages. If you?ve ever visited independent bookstore Book Passage, you know literary giants like Augusten Burroughs and Amy Tan spend evenings at the store, sharing their latest books with customers. According to Folsom Librarian Regina Maduell, the store hosts more than 700 author events each year. But it?s Petrocelli who is in the know when it comes to what?s hot between the covers (book covers, that is), and Maduell can?t wait to hear her speak on Saturday, May 19. ?I?m just thrilled,? Maduell said. ?I?ve listened to her talk about books on the Ronn Owens Show on KGO for years. She talks about the publishing business, and new books that are coming out. Elaine gives book recommendations on the show, and takes audience questions, as well.? The third event in the library?s Book Club and Literature series, the library has had a great turnout for each event, and Maduell is expecting an even larger crowd this Saturday when Petrocelli takes the floor. She recommends arriving early, as the free event is first come, first served. Petrocelli is thrilled to bring her passion to Folsom when she discusses the latest and greatest in the literature world. ?I love to talk to people about books. I talk about my favorite books of the season, and I review books by ?new authors to watch? as well as established authors,? Petrocelli said. The bookstore president will include fiction, non-fiction, travel, children?s books, food, art, gardening and more. ?I try to give the audience the inside scoop on authors and publishers,? she said. With the book world going through huge changes right now, Petrocelli has strong opinions about what?s going on, and loves to share her thoughts. A self-professed book addict, Petrocelli is relieved that she gets to read books for a living ? she wouldn?t have it any other way. ?I read several books every week ? I always have a book in my purse, a book in the kitchen, a book in the car, and of course, a stack of books by my bed. My idea of Hell is to be stuck somewhere without a book,? she said. Of course, in her industry, books are never in short supply. ?One of the great things about my job is I get to read books months before they are published, she said.? Though Petrocelli loves a good mystery, she?s not being cryptic when she declined to give any hints about the books she might discuss on Saturday. ?New books get released each Tuesday, so I won?t prepare my talk until mid week,? she explained. Her addiction to the written word becomes apparent when she talks about her personal life. ?When my husband, Bill, and I travel, we take more books than clothes. I don?t mind when planes are late, or when doctors leave me perched on a table in a paper gown ? as long as I have a book to read,? she said. Maduell knows that library patrons will leap at the opportunity to meet Petrocelli, and can?t stress enough the importance of sharing books and talking about books with friends. ?The Book Club and Literature Series brings together book clubs, interested citizens, and partners across the community to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment,? Maduell said. ?When you read a good book, you want to share it with others so they, too, may gain the pleasure and insight you derived from it. One of the joys of reading a book is exploring the connection between the world of books and the social challenges we face in our lives and communities.? Maduell said that events which promote literacy and community are one of the reasons libraries serve an important role in our world today. * * * KNOW AND GO What: Folsom Public Library Presents 2012 Favorite Book Forecast with Book Passage President Elaine Petrocelli When: 1?2:30 p.m., Saturday Where: 411 Stafford St., Folsom Info: Library.folsom.ca.us or Bookpassage.com
