The Oak Ridge Trojans are on a mission this season. They are out to prove to all those who doubted them that they believe in themselves. The players and coaches alike frequently use the phrase “we believe…” to describe this team. This team who went winless to start the season has now chalked up five straight victories in league play. The most recent victim of the Trojan battering ram offense is Galt who went down 28-7 tonight. Trojan head coach Eric Cavaliere attributes the win to a number of factors, the work ethic of the offensive line, talented players, his coaching staff, but mostly to the team attitude. “We’re winning because we believe in ourselves. We believed even when no one else did and now we are all coming together to play effectively.” Despite the identical records coming into the game tonight the balanced attack of Oak Ridge proved to be too much for Galt to handle. Things started rolling midway through the first quarter when Charlie Goodwin made an acrobatic one-handed interception to give the Trojans possession on their own 37 yard line. Two plays later fullback Jacob Allen took a handoff through the middle and found enough daylight to run 49 yards to give the Trojans an early 7-0 lead. The running game would dominate play for both sides and Oak Ridge relied heavily on Jordan Matanane for the bulk of the workload, giving him 28 carries for the night. With their first possession in the second quarter Oak Ridge handed the ball to Matanane on five snaps and then threw him a hitch pass at midfield. With key blocks from his teammates he bolted down the right sideline and into the endzone to put the Trojans up 14-0. Just before the half Kyle Gohagen made a crucial sack to force a warrior punt. Oak ridge quarterback Connor Benander took over and with just 37 seconds left in the half he hit receiver Robbie Beyer on a 30 yard pass for a touchdown. Beyer immediately celebrated by kicking the PAT and leading his team to halftime with a commanding 21-0 lead. Galt’s only score came with just a minute left in the third quarter on a 31 yard pass under heavy defensive pressure. The Trojans continued pounding the ball on the ground and midway through the fourth quarter Allen ran 41 yards through the heart of the Warrior defense for his second touchdown of the night. Up 28-7 the home team kept the pressure on until the time ran out. Oak Ridge plays their last game of the regular season next week at home against Ponderosa.
