With the winter season making its indoor-to-outdoor transition to the spring, some spring sports still dwell inside the confines of a gym.

In the boys’ volleyball Delta River League opener, the Oak Ridge Trojans controlled the contest against the Folsom Bulldogs for a three-game sweep, 25-14, 25-11 and 25-15 at Folsom High.

The Trojans improved to 4-2 on the young season and showed off great versatility with its on-court personnel. The Trojans also featured great ball distribution. Setter Sam Greenleaf had 20 assists on the night, most of which set up Storm VanSoldt, Ben Kopania and Michael Montejano.

“It was a nice opportunity to get all the kids in and move them around. I just wanted to come in here and get everyone some playing time and get out of here in three without messing around too much,” said Oak Ridge head coach Melanie DeMure.

On the other side of the net lay a lot of youth for the Folsom program. Coach Jason Cole knows that his young team has great ability that will only reveal with time.

“We just don’t have the experience. I think it’s about getting reps. If we don’t take the right risks or are afraid of taking risks; we’re not going to get better. Right now, it’s just learning to take those risks,” said Cole.

In Friday night’s game, Oak Ridge took the first two sets with ease. The Trojans burst ahead with a six-point stretch behind the hard-hitting, unorthodox serving of Greenleaf to take an 18-7 lead.

One of the bright spots for the Bulldogs was middle blocker James Rogers, who displayed great net defense by blocking six Trojan attacks and also serving up a pair of aces.

Coach Cole thinks that his freshmen, Jack Van Tuyle, Jackson LaCasse and Joey deMontel have bright futures ahead of them for his varsity program.

“I think we’ve improved,” he said. “I have a lot more nurturing to do as a coach. I’d like to see them get a little more cocky and confident and I think that’s something that they’re getting better at.”

Oak Ridge will host Vista del Lago Monday while Folsom’s next game is Wednesday at Jesuit.
