Competing without their top wrestler Saturday, Oak Ridge High’s varsity wrestling team still placed second at the Marty Manges Invitational at Casa Roble

With Keaton Subjeck taking the weekend off, teammates Ali Atebar, Zach Claiborne and Jacob Proul led the Trojans to a second-place finish, as Del Oro won the tournament.

Atebar (160), Claiborne (195) and Proul (Hwt.) won their first varsity tournaments, while Ryan Redhair (132) and Kevan Cryan (152) finished second in their first varsity championship bout.

“It was another good weekend for us,” Oak Ridge coach Casey Rhyan said. “The kids wrestled really well. For those guys to win their first varsity tournament and for the other guys to reach their first final, it’s huge just for the experience alone. Usually when you reach the final for the first time you’re too cautious because you freeze up, but none of those guys did that. This should give them a huge lift for their confidence.”

Atebar and Claiborne were impressive throughout the tournament, as they pinned all of their opponents.

Brandon Claiborne placed third at 145 pounds, while Sherman McVay (195) and James Portilla (170) placed fifth.

Bishane Sagal finished sixth at 182, while Ryan Wilson (120) and Jake Plaskon (138) earned seventh-place finishes.

Oak Ridge’s junior varsity team won four of five matches to take fifth at the Will C. Wood Duals, defeating Vintage, 67-12, Will C. Wood No. 2, 63-6, Napa, 48-21 and Pleasant Grove, 56-24.

The team had a total of 27 pins. Blake Persijn, Chandler Christy and Eugene Gheong each won all five of their matches.
