Oak Ridge and Del Oro split six matches, but two Trojan forfeits and a few extra bonus points gave the Eagles a 42-26 win over the Trojans on Saturday. The teams met in the semifinal of the Division II section dual tournament at Rosemont High School and Del Oro advanced to the final where they lost to Ponderosa, 32-22. Oak Ridge opened the tournament with a 62-16 win over Hiram Johnson, champions of the Metro League. “I thought the kids wrestled hard and wrestled well and with a lot of heart,” Oak Ridge coach Casey Rhyan said. “I felt we could have beaten Del Oro, but we had to give up 12 points from the start with forfeits and then had a couple of matches where we got pinned and gave up bonus points. They were the better team that day.” Brandon Buriani (125) and Vinny Waldhauser (171) picked up pins against Del Oro, while Keaton Subjeck (130) won by technical fall. Trey Reese (119) won by decision, as did Greg Barrier (140), who did so in overtime. In the first round against Johnson, Sean Wolberg (103), Derek Shupe (125), Subjeck (130), Josh Dawson (140), Hugh Ellerman (152) and Preston Dean (189) won by pin, while Cameron Miller (119) won by technical fall and Jon Muniz (145) won by decision, 8-6. The team’s next competition is the league tournament on Saturday. “I’m excited for the tournament,” Rhyan said. “I hope everything falls into place as we’ve got some challenge matches this week. I think we can have four or five league champs if things go well. We’ll see how it all plays out.”
