For the second consecutive week, the Trojan wrestling team won a tournament, this time at Turlock. Oak Ridge had a pair of champions at the Turlock Invitational on Saturday in Kyle West and Nick Rohrer and had six others place second, as they scored 242.5 points, finishing well in front of runner-up Turlock, who scored 212 points. More impressively, Oak Ridge won the tournament with only 11 wrestlers, as they had no one in the 152, 189 and 215-pound weight classes. “I’m happy with the consistency that each wrestler showed, that’s an important part,” Oak Ridge coach Rocco Cardinale said. “We brought 11 guys and 10 placed third or higher so to say I wish we did better in the finals is asking a lot. I’m very satisfied with how we did. In the semifinals of both the championship and consolation bracket we won every match and that exceeded my expectations.” West, competing in the 140-pound weight class, pinned Liberty’s Clint Dizney in 1:56 to win his weight class, while Nick Rohrer pinned Erick Gomez from Waterford in 3:07 to win his division. Joey Pacific (119) and Derek Shupe (130) lost by major decision in the finals, Pacific falling 13-1 to Turlock’s Fabian Garcia and Shupe to Downey’s Matt Galton, 12-2. Lukas Wilmore (171) and Kavon Tillotson (Hwt.) were pinned in the finals by Turlock’s Johnny Gutierrez and Casa Roble’s Vinnie Oddo, respectively. At 145, Kyle Sundby lost a heartbreaker to Liberty’s Nicholas Gizzo, 4-3, while Josh Dawson was injured and did not compete in the finals at 135. “Joey and Derek both lost to tough opponents and Kavon only made one mistake in a match that could have gone either way,” Cardinale said. “Kyle was right there and an inch here or there and that match could have gone either way.” Cameron Miller (103) and Brandon Buriani (112) both placed third in their weight classes, while Zach Marquez competed at 125 pounds, but did not place. The junior varsity team also had a good weekend at the Golden Sierra Tournament, as six wrestlers went undefeated and won their respective weight classes. Timmy Conway (112), Jordan Ubry (160), Desmond Cook (171) and Preston Dean (189) all went 5-0 to win their divisions, while Jared Levenson and Cameron Buriani both won all four of their matches in the 135-pound weight class. Hugh Ellerman won three of four matches at 145 pounds to place second, while Matt Coffrini went 2-1 and placed second at 215 pounds. Jon Barrett won three matches and placed third at 165 pounds. Brendan Worsley won a pair of matches at 112 pounds, as did Eric Rohrer at 152 pounds, but did not place, while Jackson Souza (130) and Jon Muniz (152) each won a single match.
