After losing their first matches of the season during the Granite Bay Tournament on March 28, the Oak Ridge varsity boys’ volleyball team got back on the winning track with wins over Ponderosa and El Camino. Those two wins improved Oak Ridge’s record to 14-2, as the team played in the Las Vegas Tournament on Monday and Tuesday. The Trojans defeated rival Ponderosa in three straight games on Thursday, winning 25-18, 25-22 and 27-25. “It was a pretty intense match like we thought it would be” Oak Ridge coach Tom Van Der Wende said. “I don’t think either team played up to their capability, but we still got the win and did it in three so that was nice.” While everyone contributed throughout the match for the win, Van Der Wende said Bryce Hunsaker, Michael Ricks and Jonathan Tuttle led the way. “Bryce did a good job setting and mixing it up,” Van Der Wende said. “Michael was strong both offensively and defensively, while Jonathan really came through for us in the second and third games in the middle.” The Trojans opened the week with an easy 25-8, 25-4, 25-16 win over El Camino on March 31. With a huge skill advantage over the opponent, the Trojans’ second-stringers came in and did most of the damage against the Eagles. “Everyone got to play,” Van Der Wende said. “Connor Dunham did a good job setting. It was a good experience for our sophomores, who are going to have to step up and play next season.”
