A win at Monday’s Sierra Valley Conference tournament would go a long way in getting Oak Ridge High’s golf team back in the groove. The Trojans struggled two weeks ago, losing to Union Mine and Christian Brothers, but turned the corner with a second-place finish at the Red Hawk Tournament and easy league wins over Cordova (183-215) and Vista del Lago (207-247) last week. “We started the season pretty solidly, but then slumped,” coach Carl Massey said. “That loss to Union Mine was an upset. They played very well and shot their best score of the season and we struggled. That match showed why every stroke is important.” Against Cordova on March 24, Andrew Block led the way with a 35 with Cory Dela Cruz right behind with a 36. Dane Petersen and Jordan Weir both shot 37s, while James Leal finished with a 38. Two days later against Vista del Lago, Oak Ridge shot a 207 led by Petersen’s 39. Block shot a 40 and Weir finished with a 41. Jarod Czinski came in with a 43, while Leal finished in 44 strokes. Last season the Trojans made it to the Masters Tournament and hope to get back there again this season. If that is to happen, Massey said Petersen and Weir will have to show them the way. “We’re going to go as far as those two take us,” Massey said. “We rely on them to be the best golfers on the course. We’re young in some respects and we’ve been up and down this season. We’d like to get back to the Masters tournament again this year.” Oak Ridge’s final match before Spring Break is at Lockeford Springs on Thursday against Galt.
