It’s been a learning and growing season for Oak Ridge High’s varsity soccer team. The Trojans have won only two of 10 games, but have played hard and improved as the season has progressed. This week the team dropped a pair of games to Jesuit and Folsom, but coach Henry Reis remains positive. “Every five or six years you have a rebuilding season and that’s what we’re going through right now,” Reis said. “We only have a few (four) seniors on the team and on top of that we’ve had a lot of injuries. (Despite our struggles) Team morale is good and the team is having fun.” One of the team’s seniors, Kevin Hanson, scored the team’s only goal in the 4-1 loss to Jesuit. Another senior, Payam Mowzooni, a co-captain along with Hanson, returned Thursday in the team’s 3-0 loss to Folsom. Mowzooni had missed half the season with an injury. Daniel Bonal and Doug James are the team’s other two seniors. The young Trojans feature three freshmen and four sophomores to go along with nine juniors. The Trojans lost to Folsom on Thursday, allowing one goal late in the first half and one early in the second, before the Bulldogs tacked on one final goal about 15 minutes into the second half. Oak Ridge, however, played well in the first half and really turned it on in the last 25 minutes of the game, but couldn’t put the ball in the net. Sophomore Alex Piatak was all over the field, creating scoring chances with his speed and skill and just missing goals on multiple opportunities. In the first half, Piatak used his speed to split two Folsom defenders and fired a shot right in front of Folsom keeper Craig Stafford that just went wide of the goal. No teammate was on the far post to knock it in. In the second half, Piatak had a header opportunity, which just went over the goal. Brian Looper suffered near misses on two scoring opportunities just minutes apart. His first attempt whistled wide left of the goal and he later just missed the mark on a header attempt in front of the goal. Cameron Perkins later fired a shot from 35 yards that Stafford got a hand on and pushed it up over the crossbar. On the ensuing corner kick, Jack Alvear’s header was another near miss. * The junior varsity Trojans defeated the Marauders, 3-1. Cole Cahill, Sam Miller and Jean Yves Diei found the back of the net, while Michael Trumbull and Miller picked up assists. Michael Petri played three-quarters of the game in net, while Connor Gann finished the game. The JV Trojans turned around and beat Folsom 2-1 on Thursday. Miller and Connor Flynn scored second-half goals to lead the team to a come-from-behind win, as the Trojans trailed 1-0 at halftime. Nico Carpignano earned an assist, while Gann was solid in goal.
