Three area students awarded art scholarships

Katie Rose Cunin, a 2009 graduate of Folsom High School, was awarded the Folsom Patrons of the Arts 2009 Scholarship for her involvement in the choral and drama programs at Folsom High School, the Hawkins School of Performing Arts, and Sacramento Ballet while achieving a high grade point average. The scholarship totals $2,500. Cunin has been actively involved in the choral and drama programs at Folsom High, where she starred in the school’s productions of “Oklahoma,” “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” and “Noises Off.” She is also experienced in ballet, having trained and danced for 13 years with the Hawkins School of Performing Arts, Folsom Lake Civic Ballet, Sacramento Ballet, Crockett-Deane Ballet, and San Francisco Conservatory of Dance. She also choreographed Millie and was nominated for a Sacramento Area Regional Theatre Alliance Elly Award. Her cumulative GPA was 4.02. Cunin also won the title of Miss Sacramento County’s Outstanding Teen 2008. She plans to attend the University of California, Los Angeles, in the fall, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in theatre. Two $500 honorable mention winners were Tisha Smith and Thomas Matzat. They are students at Folsom Lake College. Smith, of El Dorado Hills, is studying studio art and art history, specializes in painting and drawing, and pursues interests in history and anthropology. She is a member of the college’s Student Organization for Developing Art. She would like to teach art at a community college. Matzat, of El Dorado Hills, specializes in portrait drawing and since 2004 has taken art lessons from local instructor Tamara Ruiz. He is the president of the art club at the college and intends to become an art instructor himself. ~ Staff report
