Ten Trojans advance to Northeast Sub-section tourney
By: Matt Long, The Telegraph
Oak Ridge High is sending 10 wrestlers to the Northeast Sub-section championships this Friday and Saturday at Del Oro High School. The Trojans had a strong performance at last weekend's Sierra Valley Conference championships as 10 of 11 wrestlers placed in the top-four places. "I thought we wrestled well," Oak Ridge Coach Rocco Cardinale said. "The team exceeded my expectations." Andy Wagner, wrestling at 130 pounds, and Tom Haines at 215, came home from Christian Brothers High with first-place finishes. Both wrestlers had byes in the first round and then won their remaining two matches to win their weight class. In the finals Wagner defeated Burrone of Ponderosa, 4-2, while Haines pinned Gill of Ponderosa in the first period. "I'm very pleased with how Andy and Tom wrestled," Cardinale said. "They both wrestled strong and smart." Nick Ubry (103), Chris Haislet (135) and Evan Lawson (152) both finished in second place in their respective weight classes. Ubry was trailing No. 2-seeded Dancy from Galt in the semifinals, 4-3, before pinning him. In the finals he lost by technical fall to Durham of Ponderosa. Haislet split his two matches, losing to Justin Danz in the finals by technical fall. Lawson won his first two matches by pin before losing a close match in the finals to Ponderosa's Jordan Danz, 8-7. "Evan wrestled extremely well against Danz, who finished third in the state last year," Cardinale said. "I'm very proud of him." Oak Ridge wrestlers advancing to sub-sections with fourth-place finishes included Ramtin Kouchak (112), Travis Barre (119), Drew Gaan (140), Brad Cardwell (145) and Mike Matus (275). All but Kouchak, who went 1-3 on the day, finished with a 2-2 record. The top-six finishers at sub-section meet this weekend advance to the section tournament on Feb. 25-26 at Pitman High School in Turlock. Last year the Oak Ridge had five section qualifiers, including Wagner, Haines, Haislet and Lawson.
