Sutter Street Grill serves award-winning breakfast
By: Eric Laughlin, Telegraph Correspondent
When it comes to breakfast choices in Folsom, you really can’t go wrong with Old Town’s famous Sutter Street Grill. For years the restaurant has served up some of the best eats for breakfast and lunch, but it also features a laid back atmosphere that suits everyone from out-of-towners to locals looking for a home-cooked bite. And with outdoor seating, the people watching is always pleasant, especially on the weekends. The grill is owned and operated by Folsom native Lorna Lee Smart, who pretty much grew up in her mother’s local restaurants. “This is all I’ve ever done for 45 years,” said Smart. “My mother Kay Plummer had two restaurants on Sutter Street, the Cane Coffee Shop and a dinner house in the backside of what’s now the Sutter Club.” Smart said being raised in the industry has helped foster the restaurant’s success. “I can do everything from start to finish, but it’s a pretty bad day if you find me in the kitchen,” she joked. Prior to acquiring Sutter Street Grill 13 years ago, Smart owned and operating a restaurant in Truckee. “It’s funny how things end up,” she said. “I got married and opened a breakfast place in Truckee and got divorced and came back home to Folsom.” Serving breakfast usually always means getting up at the crack of dawn, something Smart and her family member employees don’t seem to mind. “I wouldn’t want to stay open late like most dinner places,” she said. “Plus it seems like you get a friendlier crowd when you serve breakfast.” You’ll find every traditional menu item at Sutter Street, but you can also choose from a list of original favorites, such as homemade corned beef hash, or the restaurant’s ever popular Country Scramble Biscuit, which features scrambled eggs, a sausage patty and gravy over a biscuit. The Sutter Street Grill is located at 811 Sutter St. in Folsom. For more information call (916) 985-4323.
