"We’re not one of those super trendy sushi places,” said Metha Jriyasetapong, owner of Kanpai Sushi, a Japanese restaurant that opened last month, just to the side of Kohl’s department store on Riley Street in Folsom.

The space previously was a Strings Italian restaurant, which has moved to 25035 Blue Ravine Road, near Green Valley Road.

“We do let ourselves get creative with our sushi,” Jriyasetapong noted, adding, “We can always customize it for you.”

“Kanpai” means “salute,” cheers” or “a toast” in Japanese.

Jriyasetapong, 43, who drives from his Natomas home to Kanpai Sushi, brings fresh fish in every other day on the way from the Sunh Fish Market in Sacramento.

The restaurant “concentrates on providing a family atmosphere,” he said. “We’re a comfortable venue where people can enjoy their food without crazy surroundings. And we’re kid-friendly. We have a kid’s menu.

“If you’re looking for quality food, this is where you want to be,” he asserted. House specialties include sushi, ramen and sukiyaki. There are no American dishes on the menu.

Jriyasetapong previously managed Taiko sushi restaurant on East Bidwell in Folsom for 12 years. He said he mostly manages the front of the house at Kanpai Sushi but does everything as needed, including working the kitchen.

Kanpai Sushi cooperates with Gekkei Kan sake brewery in Folsom, where Jriyasetapong has been teaching a sushi class the past four years.

Kanpai Sushi’s grand opening will be Thursday, Jan. 17, when there will be Gekkei Kan sake tasting from 6 p.m. until closing at 9 p.m.

The restaurant has an inside seating capacity of 70 in the dining room and about 30 for patio seating in the spring and summer.
