From the outset of the PONY West Zone Tournament in Walnut, Calif., the Sierra Valley Storm 11U boys represented El Dorado Hills and Northern California extremely well, winning two of the skills competitions and placing second and third in the other two. Taking the field for their first game on Thursday, July 21, the 11U Storm defeated a strong team from Spokane, Wash. 6-4, with solid contributions from all areas. In a classic north-south rivalry game on Friday, the Storm jumped ahead of the East Long Beach All-Stars, but was unable to hold on for the victory. The loss forced the Storm into the difficult task of winning six games in three days, but as they have done before, the boys responded with grit and determination to beat Charter Oaks by a score of 6-1 and Orangecrest in a tight 3-0 battle. At the end of their second doubleheader on Saturday, the Storm had the chance to exact revenge on their East Long Beach rivals. The boys fell behind 8-2 early, but scrapped back to tie the game by the top of the fifth inning. Momentum was building for the Storm; however, circumstances and home-field advantage proved to be too much, as the East Long Beach team was able to score several runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win the game 14-8. The Storm PONY teams are proud of their boys' efforts and representation. We look forward to another strong year in 2012.
