Storm delays weekend Christmas events in Folsom Historic DistrictBy: Laura Newell, Features Editor
Mother Nature has beat back a Folsom tradition -- the annual tree lighting in the historic district.
Originally planned for this weekend, the tree lighting and Christmas Arts and Crafts Fair fair have been rescheduled. The tree lighting will now be 6-9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7 and the craft fair from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8.
Palladio is also offering a tree lighting on Nov. 29.
The Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony in Historic Folsom will take place in the Plaza and share the stage with the Historic Railroad Turntable, said Stephanie Rodgers, executive director of the Folsom Historic District Association. The 30-foot tall holiday tree will stand in the center of the Folsom Ice Skating Rink on the railroad turntable.
The night’s event will include special performances by the Folsom High School Jazz Choir, Phoenix Elementary School and Sutter Street Theatre. Free horse drawn wagon rides and a visit from Santa will be available.
Event attendees can also bring a coat for the News 10 Coats for Kids Drive and canned food to donate to the Twin Lakes Food Bank. Drop off locations for coats and canned goods will be next to the ice rink ticket booth in the plaza next to the parking structure.
“Come early as this popular event draws a crowd,” said Rodgers.
The Christmas Arts and Crafts Fair opens up for business the following day on Dec. 8.
“This annual fair is a Folsom family tradition,” Rodgers said.
It will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. up and down Sutter Street which will be closed off to traffic.
“Fair visitors will find plenty of arts and craft gift selections to complete their holiday shopping and wonderful items to decorate their home with,” Rodgers said. “Besides, it is a fun event for the whole family with live music, carolers and so much more.”
Three parking areas will be available for both events including at the parking structure at 905 Leidesdorff, the Trader Lane parking lot or at the lower parking lot behind the brick building at Scott and Riley Street.

The tree lighting will feature free refreshments, a special appearance by Santa and performances by the Folsom High School Jazz Choir and Sutter Middle School Orchestra. CBS13’s Christina Anderson is the event emcee.
“Each weekend in December, we will offer holiday events,” said Gloria Wright, with the center.
Beginning at 1 p.m. Dec. 1, the center offers carriage rides with Santa. Learn more at GoPalladio.com.
