Sierra Valley Storm loses in West Zone quarterfinals

-A +A
With two wins and a loss, the Sierra Valley Storm squared off against Waianae, Hawaii (Oahu) in the quarterfinals of the PONY West Zone 10-and-under All-Star tournament on July 31. Both teams had already become good friends since they were staying in the same hotel and were excited to play each other. In a close, well-played game, the boys from Hawaii bested Sierra Valley, giving them a second and final loss, by changing speeds frequently on the mound and squelching the Storm's typically strong lineup. After three tournaments and four games in three days, Sierra Valley ran out of gas. The boys pitched well, but could muster no more than three runs. Tempering the loss, players from both teams threw their on swimming trunks after the game and partied late into the night, trading hats and practice shirts. Seeing these 20 competitors from different worlds talk and play as if they were long time neighbors was an unexpected and pleasant surprise. It was an experience of a lifetime not only for our players, but also the parents. The 10-and-under Storm ends the 2010 season with a record of 35-3-2. Members of the team, living in El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park, Placerville and Granite Bay include: Blake Peterson, Brady Rodriguez, Trenton Denholm, Patrick Smith, Johnny Welch, Jake Martin, Joey Fleischer, Robert Gasser, Daniel Doe, Tino Bethancourt, Tyler Austin and Kyle Maechler. Ryan Rodriguez manages the team with help from Jim Gasser and Mark Denholm.
