“Shrek the Musical,” based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks film, brings the comedic story of everyone’s favorite green ogre to life on stage at Three Stages in Folsom.

The role of the swamp-dwelling ogre, Shrek will be played by Perry Sook.

To transform into the role of Shrek, Sook has an hour and 15 minute makeup process to put on all 7 pounds of make up and 65 pounds of costume.

“It’s a lot, but by the end, I’m an ogre,” Sook said. “I think everyone is a fan of Shrek – it’s one of those series that everyone relates to, it has something that everyone likes.”

He said the animated Shrek on screen captured the hearts of many, but on a theatrical stage, it becomes magical.

“There is no other show that demands such visual and physical special affects,” Sook said. “It’s just amazing.”

Sook has been acting since he was 4 years old and professionally for the last two years. He said the journey of acting professionally is not always easy, but can be a dream come true for those who never give up.

“You just need to go for it, it’s a hard life, and you will probably hear the word no more than yes. But if you really love it, there is nothing else like it,” Sook said. “Just go for it 100 percent.”

He said the theater lifestyle is also fun, giving him the ability to travel to different cities throughout the country.

As the Shrek cast and crew travels to

Folsom, he hopes many come out to see the “magic” of Shrek.

“It delivers deep meaningful messages to audiences, but in a fun way,” Sook said. “This is a show for everyone; everyone has something they will enjoy.”

“Shrek the Musical” debuted in the summer of 2008 at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre before opening on Broadway, Dec. 14, 2008. During its Broadway run it played more than 500 performances, garnered eight 2009 Tony Award nominations, and ranked as one of the top 10 highest grossing musicals of 2009.

“Shrek the Musical” will be performed in Folsom at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 14; 8 p.m., Friday, March 15; 2 and 8 p.m., Saturday, March 16; and 1:30 and 7 p.m., Sunday, March 16. All shows will be performed at Three Stages at Folsom Lake College. Tickets are $45-$65, with premium seats for $79.
