Oak Ridge High’s cross country team approached the sub-section meet at Angels Camps as little more than a practice run and both varsity teams still qualified for Friday’s Sac-Joaquin Section Championships at Willow Hills in Folsom. Both teams decided to run together, the girls placing six runners between the 16th and 21st positions, finishing second behind St. Francis, while the boys placed fifth, with runners finishing between 30th and 36th. The top-10 teams advanced to Friday’s section meet. Coach Rob Fairley decided to have his teams run conservatively, as the section race is much more important than the sub-section race. The top-two teams advance to the state meet and Oak Ridge will attempt to have both teams qualify. Fairley feels the girls have a very good chance to make it to the state meet. If the boys are to make it, Fairley said it would be considered an upset of sorts, although he said it’s possible. The girls will be battling with St. Francis, Davis and Nevada Union, while the boys will be up against Davis, Pleasant Grove, Lincoln of Stockton, McClatchy and Nevada Union. Seniors Maxine Goyette (16TH, 20:05) and Holli Arrieta (17th, 20:05), sophomore Rachel Peterson (18th, 20:05) and freshmen Ellie Velez (19th, 20:06), Sabrina Andrus (20th, 20:07) and Maddie DeZordo (21st, 20:08) ran for the Lady Trojans. Juniors Evan Baxter (30th, 17:31) and Marcos Conde (31st, 17:31) senior Sean McHone (32nd, 17:31), juniors Zach Thornton (33rd, 17:31) and Dusty Armstrong (34th, 17:32), sophomore Ryan Prestegard (35th, 17:32) and junior Jake Zeltner (36th, 17:32) ran for the boys. “After the races both the girls’ and boys’ spirits were high,” Fairley said. “They were running in comfort mode, the boys a bit more comfortable than the girls. Everyone felt good after the race. I wanted the take the conservative route, because the sub-section course is a tough course, especially with the steep downhills, and I want my kids to have a quick recovery and not run all-out so close to the section meet.” Taylor Ashby and Abby Walker will join the varsity teams at the section meet, as both qualified at the junior varsity level, Ashby finishing seventh in 21:07 and the Walker placing ninth in 21:30. The sophomore boys and the freshman-sophomore girls also qualified for the section meet. The sophomore boys placed second and runners included Jordan Hordesky (4th, 11:55), Colin Pilcher (10th, 12:04), JT Janecek (11th, 12:07), Nick Campanello (12th, 12:08), Alex Merry (13th, 12:13), Brett Ford (18th, 12:22), Bret McNamee (23rd, 12:36) and Joey Linares (85th, 14:03). The freshman-sophomore girls finished third and featured Sami Kilcollins (8th, 13:53), Whitney Wilhelmy (9th, 13:54), Mindy Ong (16th, 14:23), Femke Keukenkamp (17th, 14:30), Alison Bamford (28th, 14:49), Karina Kauffman (31st, 14:54), Aishani Kumar (33rd, 14:57), Lauren Martinez (35th, 15:02), Sarah Reinhart (44th, 15:23) and Sami Jo Sanfelice (80th, 16:50). Oak Ridge also had a freshman boys’ team run at sub-sections and they placed eighth. Kyle Denison (41st, 13:47), Garrett Bardini (50th, 13:59), Taylor Savage (78th, 15:17), Justin Hong (90th, 16:11) and Ian Feekes (95th, 17:11) ran for the Trojans. Oak Ridge will have 32 athletes competing at the section meet. The section meet will be held at Willow Hills at Folsom High on Friday.
