Samantha Ralstin saved her best for a big stage on Saturday, as the Oak Ridge junior won the 1,600-meter run at the Sacramento Meet of Champions held at Hughes Stadium at Sacramento City College. Ralstin’s goal was to win the race and she accomplished that with a blazing, 68-second final lap and posted a winning time of 4 minutes, 56.20 seconds. It’s a personal-best mark, the third-fastest in Oak Ridge history, the fastest time in the Sac-Joaquin Section this season and seventh fastest in the state. “Samantha ran a very sound race, running comfortably in second place for 1,200 meters and then took off at the bell lap,” Oak Ridge coach Rob Fairley said. “Samantha set a goal to win the race and to break five minutes and she did both.” During the invitational meet Saturday evening, Oak Ridge also had one second-place finisher and three thirds. Hayley Scott ran second in the 800 meters in 2:15.36. It was a personal-best time and third fastest by an Oak Ridge female athlete. Holli Arrieta placed third right behind Scott in the 800 in 2:16.66, which was also her best effort and fourth on Oak Ridge’s all-time list. Brian Hanson also earned a third-place finish in the pole vault by clearing the bar at 14’3”, as did Will Findlay in the high jump at 6’4”. The girls’ 4x400-meter relay team of Arrieta, Scott, Abby Walker and Ralstin placed fifth in 3:58.76.
