After struggling in recent games, the Oak Ridge varsity girls’ volleyball team played a little better last week. The week began with a five-game victory at Golden Sierra on Sept. 13, winning 25-18, 25-20, 15-25, 18-25 and 15-13 and then the Lady Trojans split four matches at the Mitty Tournament in San Jose over the weekend. Oak Ridge lost to St. Francis of Mountain View and St. Francis of Sacramento in three straight and picked up wins over Millard North in four and Palisades in five. “The good thing about this week was that we won two matches in five games and I think if we played those same matches a week earlier we would have lost them because we would have been too emotionally spent,” Oak Ridge coach Becky Potter said. “At the Mitty Tournament, we just wanted to hang and I thought we did that.” Potter was pleased with the performance of several players, including Mysha Davies, Arden Zuber, Maddie Chambliss and Alexa Becker. “Haley Simmons is our go-to player and she played well,” Potter said. “But the times when she was off a little, those other players stepped up.” Oak Ridge has a tough week this week. After playing at Rocklin on Tuesday, the team plays host to Christian Brothers on Thursday. Not surprisingly, Potter is looking for more players to step up. “Mysha has moved from the right side to the left for us and has done a good job, but we’re still looking for someone else to step up, a sixth or seventh person if you will,” Potter said. “If we had one more player step up to spark us that would be great.”
