Peterson stars for Oak Ridge at Sac State ClassicBy: Staff Report
Rachel Peterson led Oak Ridge High’s track and field athletes at Saturday’s Sacramento State Classic Invitational.
Peterson earned Oak Ridge’s only medal by winning the 3,000 meters and did so convincingly, posting a time of 10 minutes, 56.37 seconds, 11 seconds in front of the second-place finisher.
“Rachel took command after 800 meters and looked very smooth running up front,” Oak Ridge coach Rob Fairley said.
Peterson also competed in the 800 meters earlier in the day and placed eighth with a personal-best time of 4:56.
Other Oak Ridge athletes with standout performances included Ashley Dean (fourth place, pole vault, 8’6”), Maddie DeZordo (fifth place, 3,000 meters, 11:14.60), Dusty Armstrong (fifth place, 3,000 meters, 9:04.73), Justin Priest (sixth place, high jump, 6’0”), Jacob Sipes (sixth place, 400 meters, 50.89) and Jake Zeltner (sixth place, 1,500 meters, 4:11.2).
Oak Ridge athletes will compete in the King/Gilbert Invitational Saturday at Granite Bay High.
