With the Delta River League championships Saturday at Pleasant Grove, the postseason is here. For wrestlers at Oak Ridge High, that means shorter practices with a lot more live wrestling. It’s also do or die time; place high enough in the upcoming tournaments and keep moving on or fall short and the season is over. Oak Ridge wrapped the regular season with a 38-28 win over Sheldon last Wednesday, securing a third-place finish in the Delta River League behind Ponderosa and Folsom. With five bouts to go the Trojans trailed 28-12, but won all five with bonus points to take the match by 10. Taylor Ellerman got the ball rolling Oak Ridge’s way with a pin at 140 pounds. Keaton Subjeck, wrestling Laith Alnassari, one of Sheldon’s top wrestlers, picked up an 11-0 major decision, while Alex Diaz followed with an 8-0 win at 152 to make the score 28-26. Hugh Ellerman worked a pin at 160 pounds and Vinny Waldhauser followed with another at 171 to finish off the Huskies. Xavier Lopez also picked up a pin earlier in the match at 215, as did Ido Kinel at 125 pounds, wrestling only his second varsity match. “I was concerned coming in because we still have Trey Reese and Brandon Buriani out and we kept Vinny at 171 and weren’t able to use Zach Claiborne which is not our strongest lineup,” Oak Ridge coach Casey Rhyan said. “Ido’s win was big because he got thrown to his back right away and fought off it and ended up pinning the guy. At the time we weren’t doing so well so that was a big win for us. Taylor pinned a pretty good kid and then Keaton also wrestled well, beating one of their better kids, 11-0.” Oak Ridge honored seniors Waldhauser, Diaz, Buriani, Blake Brown, Jon Muniz and Andrew Sylvester prior to the match, as it was their last home dual match of their careers.
