With seven of eight players returning to this year’s lineup, Oak Ridge High’s varsity tennis team will likely be one of the top teams again in the Sacramento area. The Trojans feature senior Tanner Schmutte and sophomore Brandon Sutter at the top of their lineup. Coach Pat Ryan considers both No. 1 players, which is a definite luxury for the team. Schmutte is recovering from a broken leg, but is back with the team. While Oak Ridge is very strong at the top of their roster, they’ve also got great depth. “We have a very strong team,” Ryan said. “With four-year singles starter and a section doubles champion Andrew Hall anchoring the middle of the lineup, along with sophomore Jimmy Giovannini, our team does not drop off in strength. At number five we have senior Alex Charn, while battling at No. 6 are junior Nic Atkinson and freshman Jacob Zetlin. Jacob is one of five freshmen that are very strong additions that have broken into the starting lineup.” The doubles teams are made up of junior Jonathan Kim and either Atkinson or Zetlin. Freshman Charlie Conarro and senior Tom Barton play at No. 2 with freshmen Matt Fergerson, Scotty Lee and Matthew Lai, along with sophomore Sangsoo Kim, fighting for playing time at No. 3 doubles. The Trojans have started the Delta River League season with a pair of dominating wins against Ponderosa (8-1) and Pleasant Grove (9-0).
