With two wins to open the postseason, Oak Ridge High’s tennis team has reached the quarterfinals, where they face Modesto Monday.

The winning team advances to Tuesday semifinals, where in all likelihood Davis will be waiting, as the defending Division I section champs must first get by Turlock.

While the Trojans played with their No. 1 player, Brandon Sutter, in the lineup in the first two rounds, they were without No. 2 Jimmy Giovannini, who was ill. While his absence didn’t keep the team from winning, the Trojans will need Giovannini with if they hope to upset Davis. Oak Ridge coach Pat Ryan said he will have Sutter, who has missed many matches this season, and Giovannini in the lineup next week, although he said it’s likely that Giovannini will not be 100 percent.

“It’s exciting to have Brandon in the lineup and watch him play,” Ryan said. “We will have Jimmy, but he probably won’t be what he could be if he were healthy, as he had an ankle injury before he got sick. I don’t know how good Modesto is, but they won their league. We will definitely need Jimmy if we face Davis and then Jesuit.”

Oak Ridge won its first two playoff matches with ease, defeating Golden Valley Monday 9-0, followed by another 9-0 win over Armijo the following day.
