Oak Ridge tennis team falls to Davis, 6-3By: Matt Long, Sports Editor
Oak Ridge’s goal for a Sac-Joaquin Section Division I tennis championship came to an end Tuesday, when the Trojans lost to Davis in the semifinals, 6-3.
The Trojans played well, but couldn’t overcome a deeper Blue Devil team, which won four of the five matches at the bottom of the ladder.
Brandon Sutter, Oak Ridge’s No. 1 singles player, picked up a win after losing the first set, 6-7, 6-2, 10-6. The Trojans’ No. 4 player, Charlie Conarro, also won his match, 6-1, 7-5. Oak Ridge’s only other win came at No. 2 doubles, where Sam Miller and Max He earned a 6-3, 6-3 win.
The Trojans dropped three matches that could have gone either way, which proved to be the difference. Jimmy Giovannini fought hard at No. 2 singles, but lost 6-3, 6-3, as did Matt Fergerson at No. 6 singles, who lost an even closer match, 6-4, 6-4. At No. 1 doubles, Matthew Lai and Clarence Lai lost a heartbreaker, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
“There were a couple matches that were even closer than the score indicated,” Oak Ridge coach Pat Ryan said. “It seemed like a winnable match, which made it more disappointing, but our guys did the best they could and put forth a good effort. It was a good-spirited match.”
