With only Ponderosa left on the Delta River League tennis schedule, a team in which Oak Ridge has already beaten comfortably, the Lady Trojans realize a piece of the league title with St. Francis is within their grasp. Oak Ridge can make that claim because for the first time in three years playing in the league, they defeated St. Francis on Sept. 20 and both teams have only one league loss, as the Troubadours returned the favor on Oct. 9. Despite the loss to St. Francis, Oak Ridge coach Ralph Clark is happy where his team is at, as they’ll face St. Francis one more time in a match to determine the top-seed from the league in the playoffs. “Now that we have beaten St. Francis in a match, I feel comfortable using the term “rival” to describe them,” Clark said. “Both teams will receive a league champion banner to mark this accomplishment. Our league sends two teams to the playoffs; one receives a higher seeding, which carries home match significance. Consequently, we will play St Francis at Broadstone Oct. 22 to determine this playoff advantage. “This year marks our third in Division I. While in Division II, Oak Ridge routinely won league in most sports. Since moving to Division I, most sports advance to the playoffs. However, we are more often than not playing second fiddle to St Francis or Jesuit. This is a big accomplishment, not only for the girls’ tennis team, but Oak Ridge High School as well.” Following the 6-3 loss to St. Francis on Oct. 9, Oak Ridge celebrated senior day on Thursday and the team went on to beat Folsom, 8-1. The team’s six seniors all played and were honored for their contribution to the team throughout the last four years. Seniors Tory Trylovich, Gabby Zeagler, Lauren Roppolo, Sydney Newman, Camille Martin and Megan Engle all played in the match. Trylovich (6-0, 6-0), Rachael Librach (6-3, 6-1), Teja Chalmcherla (6-0, 6-0), Hannah Crookham (6-0, 6-1), Miranda Miller (6-0, 6-4) and Zeagler (6-1, 6-1) won singles matches. Roppolo and Heather Dunham won 6-1, 7-5 in doubles and Ashlee Gonzalez and Sydney Newman did as well, 6-3, 6-4. Martin and Engle didn’t win, but played competitively in a 6-2, 6-3 defeat. Following the team’s regular season finale tomorrow against Ponderosa and the match against St. Francis on Monday, the Delta River League singles tournament will be held Tuesday with the doubles tournament on Oct. 25.
