Oak Ridge High’s boys’ tennis team won its opening match of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II championships on Wednesday, defeating Yuba City 7-2. The Trojans were slated to face Granite Bay in the semi-finals on Monday with the winner playing either Rio Americano or Vanden in the championship match scheduled for Tuesday. In the win over Yuba City, Oak Ridge won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Tanner Schmutte (6-2, 6-0), Brandon Sutter (6-0, 6-1), Austin Hall (6-1, 6-4), Jimmy Giovannini (6-0, 6-2) and Alex Charn (6-0, 6-2) came away with wins. In doubles action, Nic Atkinson and Jonathan Kim won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 doubles and Joe Carson and Tom Barton won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2. In the Sac-Joaquin Section Singles Tournament, also held last week, Schmutte placed second to Del Oro’s Brett Bacharach, losing 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. In the doubles tournament, Austin Hall teamed with Andrew Hall and also placed second to Kevin Valentine and Nick Lord of Ponderosa, 6-0, 6-4.
