Oak Ridge High’s wrestling team kicked off its season in fine fashion Saturday, placing second at the Freedom Duals in Oakley, despite missing three starters, having eight first-year varsity wrestlers in the lineup and forfeiting two weight classes.
The Trojans dominated their opponents in pool play, defeating Napa, 70-13, Albany, 54-24 and California, 72-9. In the semifinals, Oak Ridge got by Foothill, 48-26, before falling to James Logan High, 35-26 in the final round.
Four wrestlers, Josh Ploke (106), Brandon Claiborne (145), Ali Atebar (170) and Keaton Subjeck (182), won all five of their matches and finished the day undefeated. Ryan Redhair (132), Ryan Johnson (138), Kevan Cryan and Sherman McVay (195) all won four of five matches and placed second.
Oak Ridge’s junior varsity wrestlers attended the Amador Invitational and Patrick Irwin, Kevin Belcher and Jacob Beck had first-place finishes, while Eric Tikhanov, Rocco Ysmael and Curtis Meissner placed second.
At the Vista Invitational, varsity wrestlers Jake Plaskon and James Lee earned sixth-place finishes.
“The kids have worked very hard over the summer and fall,” Oak Ridge coach Casey Rhyan said. “It definitely showed in our wrestling Saturday.”
