A young Oak Ridge wrestling squad had no answer to Ponderosa on Thursday, as the Bruins beat the Trojans convincingly for the second straight year, 50-16. Oak Ridge only won four of 12 matches and forfeited another two, giving up several bonus points along the way, as the Bruins won four matches by pin and another two by major decisions. Oak Ridge coach Casey Rhyan was satisfied by his young team’s showing despite the final score. “Our goal coming in was to not worry about what the score is and instead worry about how we are wrestling,” Rhyan said. “I wanted us to not hold back anything and be able to walk off the mat proudly. We want teams to know that when they walk into this gym they’re going to have to wrestle like hell to beat us and tonight I thought we did that, even though the scoreboard doesn’t show that. I’m really proud of the kids. No one wrestled scared and we went right after them.” Oak Ridge had three seniors in the lineup to Ponderosa’s six. All three of Oak Ridge’s seniors, Derek Shupe, Josh Dawson and Robbie Demaso lost, while four of Ponderosa’s seniors won and another earned a forfeit victory. Of the four Oak Ridge wins, Brandon Buriani’s was the quickest, as he pinned Sean Melton at 125 pounds in 1 minute, 39 seconds with a headlock. Vinny Waldhauser’s major decision win over Allen Emmons at 160 pounds was the most dominating, as Waldhauser won 12-3, overcoming a bad cut over his left eye to win the match. Hugh Ellerman’s 11-8 win at 145 over Nick Troquato was the most inspirational, as Ellerman trailed 7-2 in the first period and came back to win. By the end of the first Ellerman had cut the deficit to one, 7-6 and the match was tied at eight after the second period. Ellerman earned an escape early in the third period and later took down Troquato to secure the win. The most evenly contested match of the night came at 130 pounds, where Oak Ridge’s Keaton Subjeck earned a hard-fought 5-3 decision over Kyle Meniketti. Subjeck never trailed in the match, working up a 4-1 lead after the first period and limiting Meniketti’s chances to score thereafter. At 140 pounds, Dawson suffered the closest loss for the Trojans against Jesse Routsong. Dawson led 4-2 after a reversal with 1:11 to go in the match, but Routsong earned a point for an escape with 16 seconds left and took down Dawson eight seconds later to win the match, 5-4. At the Clayton Valley Invitational on Saturday, Trey Reese finished third at 125 pounds and was the top Oak Ridge placer. Greg Barrier took fourth at 135 pounds, while Derek Shupe (130), Cameron Buriani (145), Ellerman (152) and Alex Diaz (160), all finished in fifth place. Oak Ridge wrestlers also fared well at the Foothill Freshman-Sophomore Tournament. Zack Claiborne won the 142-pound weight class, winning all four of his matches, three by pin. Four Oak Ridge wrestlers took second place in their weight classes. Brendan Worsely (131), Ali Atabar (136), Johnny Ploke (152) and Eric Rohrer (187) all won three of four matches to place second. Worsely pinned three of his opponents, while Atabar pinned two opponents. Ploke picked up a win in overtime. Richard Fam (109), Xavier Lopez (209) and Sunny Sarabjit (215) also won three out of four matches. All three of Fam’s and Sarabjit’s wins came by fall, while Lopez had two pins. Andrew Pearson (166) split his four matches and both wins came by pin. After hosting Vista tonight in a dual meet, the Trojans will compete in the Tim Brown Invitational this weekend at Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento.
