The water polo season will come down to the final games to see if Oak Ridge High’s teams will make the postseason. Both the varsity boys’ and varsity girls’ teams need to win both matches this week to qualify for the postseason, and the girls need even more help from an unlikely source. The Lady Trojans will be pulling for archrival Ponderosa to beat McClatchy, because if they don’t, the dreams of a berth in the playoffs will be dashed, according to coach Don McCormick. Oak Ridge needed to beat El Dorado on Tuesday and the teams wrap up the regular season at home Thursday against Rosemont in another must-win match. Both Oak Ridge teams enter the final week of the regular season coming off impressive wins against Christian Brothers on Thursday. The boys won 21-4, while the girls came away with a 14-4 victory. Bryan Cole scored three goals to lead the boys, followed by two apiece from Carson Willms, Josh Verner, Riley McNamara, Ian Austerman, Dominic Cardinale, Garrison Yeandle, Justin Chambliss and Connor Frace. Bryan Bare and Bryan Witt both added one goal. In the girls’ win, Ashley Adams and Haley Godwin both scored four goals, while Taylor Turville, Annie Randolph, Amanda Jones, Megan Lee, Caitlin Welsch and Kristie Kaiser all chipped in one goal. The teams have played well recently. Both the varsity and junior varsity girls’ teams won the Napa Valley Tournament on Oct. 10, while the junior varsity boys placed second in the Jesuit Invitational on Oct. 16.
