After 12 consecutive wins to start the season, Oak Ridge High’s junior varsity girls’ basketball team lost its first game on Saturday, falling to Del Oro, 56-53. A non-league game played on a Saturday is a bit out of routine to a normal weeknight game and it proved in this instance to be too much for the Lady Trojans. The team, in fact, showed up later than they were supposed to and never got a good warm-up in. “My team showed up late and I could tell their hearts weren’t into it,” Oak Ridge coach Annie Lamy said. “It looked like they didn’t want to be there. We didn’t get a good warm-up in and came out flat and were down 22-9 after the first quarter.” Oak Ridge outscored the Golden Eagles in the final three quarters, but the 13-point deficit was too much for them to recover from. Ali Bettencourt led the way with 23 points, including five three-pointers and six-of-nine foul shooting. Jenn Hoffman scored 14 points and Nikki Dow finished with eight. The freshman team played two games last week, winning both, to improve to 12-2 on the year. Oak Ridge began the week with a 58-0 pasting of Woodland on Jan. 3. Celeste Vitolas led Oak Ridge with 13 points, while Nina Grimes scored 12. Krisztina Zagyi finished with 10, while Lauren Barca had eight. On Saturday the team trailed Del Oro 31-28 after three quarters and then outscored the Golden Eagles 23-10 in a brilliantly played fourth quarter to win the game, 51-41. “As poorly as we played in the third quarter, we put forth a great effort in the fourth and decided we wanted to win,” Oak Ridge coach Greg Lamy said. Zagyi led the team with 14 points, while Vitolas finished with 11 and Heather Dunham scored 10.
