Only a few points and a couple calls from the referees kept Alexa Becker and Katie Vaughn from winning the USA Beach Junior Tour Volleyball Championships. Held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. on Aug. 22, the tournament featured the best teen beach volleyball duos from around the country and Becker and Vaughn won three of their five matches to place seventh out of 15 teams. “The two matches we lost were really close,” Becker said. “Our first match we just took awhile to warm up and our last match there were just some bad calls from the referees that changed the game.” Between the two losses, Becker and Vaughn won three straight matches. They were two wins away from reaching the championship match. Despite their limited time playing together and on sand, Becker and Vaughn have shown they have the talent and skill to compete with anyone. “It was a really fun tournament,” Becker said. “We played really well and were close to advancing even further. I’m definitely glad we went.” Vaughn said she also enjoyed the tournament. “It was so much fun and I’d love to do it again,” Vaughn said. “I’m happy with how we played. It was the best that we ever played. We definitely had a chance to win the tournament.” The duo has no plans of playing in another sand tournament at the moment, as the high school volleyball season is under way. As for now, they plan to help the Oak Ridge team be the best it can be.
