Oak Ridge cross country wins three of four divisions at second league meet

Oak Ridge High won three of the four divisions of the second Sierra Valley Conference League Meet held Wednesday at Granite Park in Sacramento. Running for the first time all season in cool temperatures, the Trojans won both varsity races, as well as the freshman-sophomore boys’ race. Christian Brothers won the freshman-sophomore girls’ race. Vista del Lago took second in the varsity girls’ race and third in the varsity boys’ division. Vista’s Madeleine Ankhelyi won the varsity girls’ race, finishing in 19 minutes, 21 seconds, eight seconds in front of Oak Ridge’s Jackie Mansoor. Maxine Goyette and Hayley Scott placed third and fourth in 19:31 and 19:36, respectively. LeeAnn Hold and Kaileen Palmero rounded out the scorers for the Lady Trojans, as Hold ran 10th in 20:21 and Palmero placed 11th one second behind. Vista’s Marissa Mendez finished fifth in 19:42, and she was followed by Jennifer Morgan (7th, 19:57), Jennifer Arbaugh (16th, 20:51) and Alicia Segura (20th, 21:27). Oak Ridge won the meet with 30 points, while Vista scored 49. Oak Ridge had the top-four finishers in the varsity boys’ race, as Amjed Aboukhadijeh, Nathan Williams, Benji Xie and Zachary Speno all completed the race in 16:52. Clay McNamee ran eighth in 17:15. Ian Kennedy was Vista’s top finisher, as he placed ninth in 17:23. Matt Winkler ran 15th in 17:59, followed by Riley Martin (18th, 18:19), David Howell (21st, 18:37) and Bobby Melchin (30th, 19:25). Oak Ridge won the meet with 18 points, while Ponderosa scored 57 and Vista ended with 88 points. In the freshman-sophomore boys’ division, Oak Ridge placed their five runners in the top eight, including sweeping the first three positions with Evan Baxter (10:40), Jake Zeltner (11:07) and Zachary Thornton (11:09). After three Christian Brothers’ runners, Marcos Conde (7th, 11:32) and Evan Scherzinger (8th, 11:46) finished Oak Ridge’s scoring. Zach Jaeger placed 11th for the Eagles, finishing in 11:54. He was followed by Mitch Thompson (22nd, 12:50), Jordan Takeuchi (31st, 13:16), Krishna Polavali (32nd, 13:22) and Mikey Slayton (39th, 13:34). The Trojans scored 21 points to win easily over Christian Brothers (34). Vista placed fifth with 122 points. Oak Ridge’s Abby Walker and Holli Arrieta went one-two in the freshman-sophomore girls’ race, finishing with identical times of 12:33. Vista’s Hannah Osuna finished third in 12:40. Also scoring for Oak Ridge were Mia Brower (9th, 14:10), Pari-Naz Javaheri (23rd, 15:41) and Hailey Heil (31st, 16:34). Following Osuna for the Eagles were Jessica Price (11th, 14:23), Elizabeth Anderson (16th, 14:45), Paige Robinson (17th, 14:46) and Sydney O’Brien (28th, 16:17). Christian Brothers won the meet with 48 points, while Oak Ridge took second with 53 points. Liberty Ranch placed third with 54 points, followed by Vista del Lago with 63 points.
