Oak Ridge cross country teams place second in league

Oak Ridge athletes turned in a solid performance at the Delta River League cross country championships on Saturday at Willow Hills.

The Trojan varsity teams ran second to Jesuit and St. Francis, while the freshman-sophomore boys won their race and the freshman-sophomore girls ran third.

The varsity boys finished 16 seconds behind Jesuit and in second place. Jake Zeltner and Marcos Conde, by placing in the top-10 in seventh and ninth, earned all-league honors. Zeltner finished the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 51 seconds; his best time by 18 seconds. Conde’s time of 16:55 was his best by nine seconds.

Zach Thornton, Evan Baxter and Dusty Armstrong rounded out the scorers with top-20 finishes. Thornton placed 16th (17:26), Baxter was 17th (17:27) and Armstrong placed 19th (17:34). Jordan Hordesky (17:35) and Ryan Prestegard (17:48) also ran on the varsity roster.

Rachel Peterson was the varsity girls’ lone all-league performer, as she placed fourth in 19:07, her best time on the course by 45 seconds.

Briana Dulgar and Ellie Velez had solid top-15 finishes, as Dulgar ran 13th in 20:09 with Velez following in 15th in 20:20. Oak Ridge’s final two scorers were Maddie DeZordo and Whitney Wilhelmy, as they placed 18th and 19th in 20:41 and 20:46, respectively. Samantha Kilcollins (20:47) and Alison Bamford (21:24) rounded out the top-seven runners.

Alex Merry won the freshman-sophomore boys’ race, leading the team to a low score of 31 points. Chad Vardas and Brett Ford also ran in the top-five, while Kyle Kauffman earned a top-10 finish. Vardas and Ford ran fourth and fifth in 12:04 and 12:06, respectively. Kauffman placed tenth in 12:18. Patrick Irwin was the team’s final scorer in 11th place in 12:20. Jason Phen (12:23) and Bret McNamee (12:40) placed on the team’s top-seven runners.

The freshman-sophomore girls placed third behind St. Francis and Folsom. Lauren Martinez led Oak Ridge by placing tenth in 14:33. Arial Hendrickson and Peyton Wright ran 13th and 15th in 14:45 and 14:50, respectively. The team’s final two scorers were Karina Kauffman (17th, 15:00) and Aishani Kumar (18th, 15:00). Rounding out the top-seven runners were Katie Kitowski (15:19) and Leesa Bingham (15:51).

The Oak Ridge cross country teams will compete in the sub-section meet on Saturday at Angels Camp. The top-10 varsity teams at the meet qualify to compete in the section meet on Nov. 10 at the Willow Hills course. The top-6 non-varsity teams at the sub-section meet qualify to compete at the section meet.
