Oak Ridge cross country team shows depth at Hornet JamboreeBy: Staff Report
Oak Ridge High’s cross country team showed its overall depth on Saturday by placing four teams in the top-six of four different races at the Hornet Jamboree held Saturday at Granite Regional Park. The freshman-sophomore boys’ were the class of the field, finishing well in front of Woodcreek to win by 48 points. Jordan Hordesky placed third in the two-mile race in 12 minutes, 7 seconds to lead the way. Alex Merry placed fifth, sixth seconds behind. Chad Vardas ran 11th in 12:36, followed by Jason Phen (13th, 12:41), Brett Ford (20th, 12:49), Patrick Irwin (28th, 12:58) and Bret McNamee (35th, 13:04). The freshman-sophomore girls ran third behind Woodcreek and Folsom with Briana Dulgar winning the race in 13:46. Maddie DeZordo placed 14th in 14:39 with Whitney Wilhelmy four seconds behind in 16th place. Mikhayla Polivka ran 20th in 14:57 followed by Karina Kauffman (30th, 15:36), Arial Hendrickson (38th, 15:57) and Katie Kitowski (45th, 16:12). The varsity girls and boys had similar finishes in the 5-kilometer varsity races, as the girls took fifth, while the boys ran sixth. Rachel Peterson placed eighth to lead the varsity girls, finishing in 19:16. Teammate Ellie Velez placed 16th in 20:07 with Alison Bamford finishing 50 seconds behind in 25th place. Sami Kilcollins took 31st in 21:11 followed by Mindy Ong, who ran 77th in 23:19. Dusty Armstrong was the top finisher for the varsity boys, as he placed 13th in 16:13. Marcos Conde ran 21st in 16:28 and teammate Ryan Prestegard ended up 33rd in 16:51. Zach Thornton placed 39th in 16:56 with teammates Evan Baxter (81st, 17:47), JT Janecek (109th, 18:44) and Nick Campanello (113th, 18:58) rounding out the roster.
