Oak Ridge comes from behind to beat Sheldon, 7-4By: Staff Report
Oak Ridge rebounded from a 3-0 deficit with four runs in the fifth inning on its way to a 7-4 win over Sheldon Monday.
The win improved the team’s Delta River League record to 4-3, as they sit a game behind Jesuit and Pleasant Grove, who are 5-2. The Marauders were upset by Ponderosa, 9-7, on Monday.
Logan Denholm led off the fifth inning with a double and scored on FP Santangelo’s single. Tanner Ales later knocked in Chris Roppolo, who reached base on a fielder’s choice and Oak Ridge tied the game when Alec de Watteville, who had singled, scored on a Sheldon error.
A second Sheldon error of the inning scored pinch runner Jon Seim, giving Oak Ridge a 4-3 lead.
The Trojans tacked on another run in the sixth when John Rico scored on Mickey Meinhofer’s grounder.
Sheldon got a run back off Austin Root in the bottom of the sixth, tightening the game to 5-4, but the Trojans rallied for two insurance runs in the seventh on Denholm’s two-run single.
Root pitched a completed game, as he allowed seven hits but also struck out seven. Denholm had a pair of hits to go along with his two RBIs, while de Watteville also had two hits. Santangelo and Marston finished the game with three hits.
The defensive play of the game came from Meinhofer in the bottom of the sixth with Oak Ridge nursing a one-run lead. Sheldon’s Brandon Langan scorched a one-hopper up the middle, which Meinhofer made a diving grab of and threw to de Watteville to get the out at second base to end the inning.
Oak Ridge plays host to Sheldon Wednesday before facing the Huskies on the road again Friday.
