The playoff frustration continues at Oak Ridge as the Trojan football team lost another heartbreaking playoff game in the first round on Saturday.
For the fifth straight year, the Trojans came out on the losing end of a heartbreaking finish to the season. The Trojans came from 17 down to take a 35-31 lead, only to see Lincoln score the winning touchdown with 14.2 seconds remaining for a 37-35 victory.
While the loss hurt badly, the coaching staff talked more about how proud they were of the team after the game.
“They could have packed it in when Lincoln went up by 17, but they responded well and crept back into the game,” Oak Ridge coach Eric Cavaliere said. “If we would have finished this game last night we probably wouldn’t have been in it at all, but I credit the coaching staff for the work they did and the adjustments they made overnight and the players for focusing and executing what had to be done. They all stepped up.”
The Trojans trailed 24-14 at halftime when the power went out in Stockton on Friday night. Because it could not be restored, the game was scheduled to resume at 3:30 p.m. today.
Things didn’t start off well for Oak Ridge, as they fumbled on the first offensive play of the second half under surprising hot conditions in Stockton. Two plays later, Lincoln scored on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Zack Greenlee to Brandin Cooks and the extra point put them firmly in control at 31-14, or so it seemed.
Oak Ridge’s comeback began with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Collie midway through the third quarter. On Lincoln’s next possession, Oak Ridge’s Travis Daly sacked Greenlee in the end zone for a safety that pushed momentum to Oak Ridge’s sideline.
Following a big punt return from Collie, Oak Ridge got the ball in good field possession and Ryan Adams finished the drive with a six-yard run to make the score 31-29. The Trojans converted on the two-point conversion on a throw from Will Tostenson to Willie Tucker, but Tucker was flagged for pass interference and the points were not awarded.
Adams gave Oak Ridge a 35-31 lead with his second touchdown run with 7:41 to play, while the defense continued to play tough, stopping Lincoln on four straight possessions. The fourth consecutive stop gave the Trojans the ball with 3:41 to play, but the offense couldn’t run out the clock.
Jordan Matanane had his number called on consecutive plays and earned three yards. On third-and-seventh, Tostenson’s pass attempt to Adams was nearly intercepted and Oak Ridge decided to punt.
Lincoln started its game-winning drive at their own four-yard line with 2:22 to play and calmly completed four straight passes that put them at the Oak Ridge 32. After an incomplete pass, Lincoln completed a pass that brought the ball to the nine-yard-line with 49 seconds to play.
Tim Spykerman almost intercepted the next pass in the end zone, but instead it fell to the ground. On the next play Greenlee hooked up with Cooks, which brought the ball to the one-yard line. Greenlee took it in from there with 14.2 seconds remaining to give his team the lead.
Oak Ridge had three plays to attempt to score, but Tostenson was sacked, threw an incomplete pass and sacked again as time ran out.
“We played our butts off and didn’t stop, fighting to the end,” Adams said. “We did whatever we could to win the game.”
