Behind eight goals by Bryan Cole, Oak Ridge High’s varsity boys’ water polo team advance to the second round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs on Friday, courtesy of a 15-3 win over Downey.

Cole’s eight goals tied a school record for most goals in a game.

The win advanced Oak Ridge to today’s second-round match against Lodi. The winner of that match plays the Granite Bay/Today winner in the semifinals at noon Thursday.

“We didn’t expect Downey to be strong and we were able to put the game away early,” Oak Ridge coach Don McCormick said. “We also didn’t want to show Lodi much, since we played them next. We faced them a couple weeks ago in a tournament and they beat us by two so it should be a good match this time around.”

Bryan Bare added three goals in the win, while Austin Turville scored twice. Trevor Dong and Kyle Bare each had one goal, while Kasian Strawick and Max Dilliard combined to allow only three goals in the net.

The varsity girls’ team saw its season come to an end Saturday after a 9-3 loss to St. Mary’s.
