FOLSOM, CA - Students from Stages-Folsom Dance Arts will perform two special nights of contemporary dance with their new show, “Speak.”
Folsom’s iMPACT Contemporary Dance Artistic Director Kelli Leighton has created an original production for this youth dance company to close the season. The show, entitled “Speak,” explores the power of words and labels through the beauty and energy of contemporary dance. The piece was inspired by poetry, song lyrics and famous quotes, Leighton said.
“This is a contemporary dance style so it is very exciting because there is a more artistic and emotional style to it,” Leighton said. “It’s very athletic. Contemporary is a fusion of styles and appeals to a broader audience. People can relate to it. There is a more human aspect to it.”
The show will be performed at the Jill Solberg Performing Arts Theatre located on the Folsom High School campus at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, April 20 and at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 21.
iMPACT is part of Stages-Folsom Dance Arts’ three dance companies. The non-profit organization includes: Ballet Folsom, Sound Out Tap Company and iMPACT Contemporary Dance.
“Speak” will include performances by students from all three companies for a complete concert of dance, Leighton said.
“These kids are very dedicated dancers and train up to 10-15 hours a week. Their age range is from 9-18 years old,” Leighton said. “I really encourage people to come see these talented, hard-working kids.”
