The Northern California Volleyball Club 16-1 Black team, comprised of players from the greater Sacramento area, lost only one match and placed second in the national division at the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships held in Atlanta July 1-4. The team, coached by Oak Ridge varsity girls’ volleyball coach Becky Potter and assisted by John Grix from Rio Americano, featured top players from the area, including Gabriella Palmeri of St. Francis High, who’s committed to play at Pepperdine in the fall of 2013. Palmeri’s teammate at St. Francis, Allison Child, also played on the team along with Granite Bay’s Taylor Nelson and Maddy Deters. Ponderosa’s Lindsey Bowles is on the team as is Placer’s Kirstin Schauble, Bear River’s Sara Schell, Rocklin’s Sara Sheehy, Del Oro’s Morgan Lees, Christian Brothers’ Meggie Larson, Rio Americano’s Maddie Cannon and El Camino’s Cassidy Denny. Playing against 47 teams in the national division, NCVC 16-1 Black won all their matches until the championship round. With the game tied at 13 and both teams two points from victory, NCVC 16-1 Black lost the next two points and lost the match. “This is a very talented team and I’m pleased with how they played,” Potter said. “We basically placed 34th in the nation and we were very happy with that finish.”
