Austin Oberg doesn't recall missing a free throw all season with the Colfax High junior varsity basketball team. Selective memory or not, Oberg can shoot. He will join Auburn's Nicholas Leonard and Tracy Cirksena at the Knights of Columbus State Free Throw Championships in Fresno on Saturday. All three took first place at the Northern California championships in El Dorado Hills last week. Oberg and Leonard are first-time free throw contest competitors while Cirksena is seeking to take last year's success one step further. Cirksena took second at last year's state championships. Leonard made 20 out of 25 free throws in the final round at Holy Trinity Parish Hall in El Dorado Hills to earn the NorCal title in the 11-year-old division. A guard on the St. Joseph's School basketball team, he made 13 out of 15 in the first round to make the finals. Cirksena, also a St. Joseph's product, sank 18 out of 25 shots in the final round to win by four. Oberg made 21 of 25 free throws in the final to win by two. The Colfax High freshman played point guard for the Falcons' JV team is competing in the 14-year-old division. The three local competitors will take their shot at the state title at San Joaquin Memorial High in Fresno. Each state champions' scores will be submitted to the Supreme Knights of Columbus office and an international champion will be named in each division.
