FOLSOM — Lakeside Little League’s Junior all-stars battled through a crazy game Saturday before being eliminated by Snowline 19-18 in the District 54 tournament at Lembi Park.

A suicide squeeze bunt in the eighth inning ended the 37-run game. Lakeside had 11 hits and seven errors, while Snowline had 13 hits and eight errors.

Lakeside scored the first run of the game on a balk. It was a sign of things to come.

Lakeside took a 3-1 lead on a two-run double, and Snowline came back. Each team scored seven runs in the fourth inning.

A game that changed leads four times reached a nail-biter scenario in the bottom of the seventh, when Snowline rallied from an 18-13 deficit to tie the score. Snowline had the winning run at third with two outs against C.J. Whelan, Lakeside’s third pitcher. Whelan took over in the fifth after Kyle Galbaugh was injured sacrificing his leg for an out on a hard-hit ground ball.

The game went to extra innings when Whelan slid into first base and beat the runner for the final out.

Lakeside stranded a runner at third before Snowline’s winning rally. A single and sacrifice put a Snowline runner at second base, and a failed pickoff attempt moved him to third with one out.

The squeeze bunt dribbled short of the pitcher’s mound and made for a solemn end to a tense game for Lakeside.

“We kept going up on them and they kept coming back. We thought we had them there in the bottom of the seventh, but we just couldn’t put them away,” Lakeside manager Rob Rocha said. “I’m proud of our guys though. Nineteen to eighteen? Come on. We had a great tournament. We just came up a little short.”
