Through 11 games last season, Oak Ridge High’s varsity girls’ softball team had three wins on its way to a six-win season.
Oak Ridge has already eclipsed last season’s win total, having won eight games. That’s a big step in the right direction for the Lady Trojans.
“It’s going way better than last year,” Coach Sam Kloczko said. “The kids have stepped up and done a great job. Last year we lost a lot of close games, but this year we’re winning those games. Lauren (Bertoy) and Lindsey (Zito) have been leading us and Alyssa (Burns) has been throwing well. We’ve found a way to win even though our glove work hasn’t been that good. We’ve got to clean that up.”
Oak Ridge won both of its games last week, starting with a 16-9 win over Vista del Lago Wednesday, a game in which Bertoy’s talents were on full display. The senior shortstop and leadoff hitter, who next fall will attend Stanford and play softball on scholarship, hit for the cycle, scored three runs, stole three bases and drove in seven in a dominating performance.
Three days later, Oak Ridge crushed Davis, 12-0, in a five-inning game. Alyssa Burns allowed only one hit in the game, while her team had 14, including three from Jackie Schmaeling to go along with her four RBIs and three runs scored For the second straight game, Schmaeling hit a home run. Katelyn Castro tripled and hit a home run and drove in six runs. Bertoy and Renee Bardini also had two hits.
The Trojans' next game is at Folsom Thursday.
