Oak Ridge High’s junior varsity girls’ basketball team remained perfect on the season by winning all three games of the Bulldog Winter Classic to improve to 12-0 on the season. Oak Ridge bowled over the competition, defeating McClatchy 70-23, Kennedy, 63-21 and El Camino in the championship game, 70-33. Shelby Peters earned the tournament’s Most Valuable Player Award, while Yumi Drossos also made the all-tournament team. “It was very anti-climactic,” Oak Ridge coach Annie Lamy said. “Shelby was our leading scorer or close to it in all three games and really came out focused and ready to play and that was nice. Yumi brought a lot of energy and they both earned their awards.” Peters scored 14 points in the win over McClatchy, while Krisztina Zagyi had 13 and Alyssa Ramona threw in 12. Peters also led the way against Kennedy with 10 points. Nina Grimes also scored 10, while Zagyi had eight. Drossos finished with 11 against El Camino. Grace Derksen, Celeste Vitolas and Peters all scored eight. The Oak Ridge freshman reached the championship game of the El Dorado tournament with big wins over Bella Vista, 54-9 and El Camino, 77-38, but then lost to Pleasant Valley in the finals, 50-39. The result put a damper on the entire tournament. “Pleasant Valley was one of the best teams we’ve played this year, but it was just an awful performance by us,” Oak Ridge coach Greg Lamy said. “We just had a fundamental breakdown in all areas and it was very disappointing. It was just a really poor effort.” Morgan Jones single-handedly kept the team in the game with 21 points. Jones and Jessica Maglietta made the all-tournament team.
