The third time was indeed a charm for Oak Ridge, as the Lady Trojans defeated Valley 72-28 to win the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II championship on Saturday at Arco Arena. After losing the last two championship games to St. Francis, the Lady Trojans weren’t to be denied this time against the Vikings, the team that defeated St. Francis in Wednesday’s semifinal. After a poor first quarter and a second quarter that started off good but didn’t finish so well, Oak Ridge only led by 10 at halftime, 29-19. In the second half, though, the Lady Trojans played their game and put a whipping on the Vikings, outscoring them 31-7 in the third quarter and 43-9 in the second half. Sara James scored 17 of her game-high 26 points in the third quarter to lead the way, as Oak Ridge rolled to the big win. “It feels good,” Kristina Williams said of winning a section title. “Last year was such a heartbreaker. We all worked hard and stepped up.” “Everybody here has been with the program for awhile and saw what happened the last few years,” James added. “To lose those two games just gave us motivation.” James put up numbers in the third quarter that would be an outstanding game for most players, scoring 17 points on seven-of-nine shooting and she grabbed three rebounds and had five steals to boot. For the game she pulled down nine rebounds and had six assists. Williams and Caitlin Welsch both scored 12 points with Williams grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out a team-high five assists. Welsch added five rebounds, as did Kaleigh Durket, who also scored six points and made all three of her field goal attempts.
