Four players reached double digits in points as Oak Ridge High’s varsity girls’ basketball team defeated Sheldon on Tuesday, 64-37. Kristina Williams overcame early foul trouble to score 16 points, leading the Lady Trojans to the non-league win. Sara James and Carly Bettencourt both scored 13 points, while Caitlin Welsch added 10. Oak Ridge jumped out to a 17-5 lead after the first quarter and led 31-19 at halftime. A big 21-7 advantage in the third secured the win. “I thought it was a good overall effort,” Oak Ridge coach Steve White said. “We had to play through the second quarter when things didn’t go our way and there wasn’t a lot of flow, but we maintained our composure.” Williams got hot in the second half and Bettencourt and Welsch contributed key points as well. “It’s nice to have four girls in double figures,” White said. “Caitlin is coming along and we’ve got to find ways to get her the ball. Carly also played well.” Despite the large margin of victory, White said his team learned important things in the game. “We learned that we’ve got to control on-ball defense and we’ve also got to execute better in the half-court offense and pay more attention to detail if we want to achieve our goals.” Oak Ridge’s next game is at Union Mine on Friday, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
